Are there situations where it is preferable to use cross-step?

I have addressed many of your questions in prior posts. If you use the search feature (spyglass at top of home page) you can find information. Search on items like footwork, returning a lob, split step, etc. (BTW: the search function is not always perfect…but it is a good start.)

Its the one part of my game that I find difficult to master. For instance, what is preferred footwork for returning a deep serve? Should footwork be different if I want to drive the ball deep v. lob return? How about when retreating to get a lob? When approaching ball hit short into my court after my team serves? Seems like different situations call for different foot work. Or do fast/hard rules apply?

This advice applies to all pickleball shots.
