Quick Fixes

I’ve written before about quick fixes.  If you are a regular reader, you know that when it comes to shot making I focus on the fundamentals of body mechanics, paddle position, etc. and there are seldom quick fixes.  But today I actually am going to suggest something that will instantly improve your game.

make these Pickleball Decisions before every point

pickleball decisionsFirst, when you are receiving a serve I want you to agree with your partner on where you intend to hit the return of serve.  Take just a moment to talk to one another, and choose a specific target.

And, when you are the serving team I want you to decide where you intend to hit your third shot.  Talk to your partner and agree on your target.

You may be asking why I am suggesting that you make a simple decision, with your partner, before every point.  Well, the answer is simple…it works!

  • First, it ensures you and your partner are on the same page;
  • Choosing a very specific target improves the likelihood that the ball will land near the spot; and
  • Having a specific target relieves stress…it is one less decision you need to make during the shot.

Too often our only goal is to get the ball over the net.  Whether it be in play, or when people are drilling…too often they just want to get it back.  I can tell as I watch them play.  I realize during a point there are so many things to consider.  Where do I want to hit the shot?  What speed will I return the ball?  What about the next shot?

However, before you serve or return serve…there is a moment of peace.  There is time to think.  There is time to make a decision.  And, of course, there is time to communicate this with your partner.

Simple pickleball decisions

Making these simple pickleball decisions can really have an impact on your game.  Of course, there will be times when you don’t hit the ball to that spot.  That’s okay, we are all human.  But having a plan will improve your odds.  Having a plan is a great way to start.
